Colo. medical pot suppliers will have to pay taxes

DENVER — Colorado is gearing up to officially tax and regulate medical marijuana dispensaries, a move lawmakers say amounts to legal recognition of a growing industry.

The state Attorney General John Suthers concluded in an opinion issued Monday that medical marijuana is considered personal property that can be taxed and shouldn't be treated like prescription drugs, which are tax exempt.

The move would make Colorado the latest provincial government to tax marijuana for medical use, after voters in California adopted a similar program when the use was legalized in 1996. Cities such as Denver and Oakland, Calif., also plan to levy municipal taxes on local cannabis dispensaries.

First-Ever Cannabis Cafe to Open in Portland for Medical Marijuana Patients

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The hippest joint in town, Rumpspankers, is Oregon NORML's Cannabis Café set to kick off next Friday at exactly 4:20 p.m.

The special cafe for members only is an innovative gathering place for the medical cannabis community, brought to fruition by Oregon NORML, the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws.

Madeline Martinez, Executive Director of Oregon NORML, says this cafe will fill a void that so many patients feel in their lives. "Not only will these legal medical cannabis users be able to discuss and educate freely, but they get the social interaction that so many patients just don't have access to."

Colorado Board Of Health Holds Emergency Meeting To Determine Definition Of Medical Marijuana "Caregiver"

By Jessica Peck Corry and Robert J. Corry, Jr.

With the national debate over how--or even whether--to legalize marijuana now hitting a fevered pitch, many eyes are focused squarely on Colorado, where lawmakers are now considering proposals to increase regulation of the state's vibrant medical marijuana industry.

Unfortunately, emotion is trumping fact in too much of this public debate. In a guest column carried in today's Denver Post (authored by Robert and titled "Stop the Medical Marijuana Madness"), as well as through previous commentary we've authored, we lament how a handful of powerful politicians, including some of our fellow Republicans, are using antecdotes, half-truths, and unfounded theories, to make their case for cumbersome regulation, including moratoriums that could prevent new dispensaries from opening at all.
